The first thing to determine, is can the windshield be repaired or does it need to be replaced? Whether or not you can repair depends on:
Size of damage
A general rule to follow is a chip smaller than a quarter and a crack shorter than three inches can easily be repaired. Of course there are limits based on the type of crack and chip as to whether a repair can take place.
Depth of damage
If the damage is only on the outside layer of the windshield it is much easier to repair. Sometimes a windshield replacement is required if the damage has penetrated the inside layer of glass.
Location of damage
If the damage extends all the way to the outer edges of the windshield, it is probably safe to replace, as the integrity of the windshield has been compromised. Also, if the repair would cause the driver's side line of vision to be impaired, replacement may be the best way to go. With sensors on our windshields, the repair or replace question can be more complicated, as some of these sensors cannot be easily fixed.
Safety above all else
Driving around with a crack or chip is a safety risk. In rollovers and front end collisions the windshield is not just a shield from wind, but is a big piece of the structural integrity of the cabin. So, repairing or replacing a damaged windshield could make a huge difference if you ever find yourself in one of these unfortunate accidents.
